| 2002 Trip to China Sifu Gallaher
recently returned from a two week martial art trip to China. It was during this trip that
Sifu Gallaher and his school were placed into the newly established wing chun museum. A
plaque and a photo of Sifu Gallaher and his students will be on display at the museum.
Part of the selection process includes providing authentic lineage that is traceable and
pure. You also need to be active in the Ving Tsun (wing chun) Athletic Association. Pure
wing chun simply means that you teach the unadulterated system, not chop suey. Wing chun
is a straight forward, not frills self-defense system. The systems self-defense moves are
geared toward men and women. In the wing chun system you never collide with an opponents
force but you use the opponents energy or pressure against them. This is similar to
bamboo, it bends and yields to the wind, but when the wind ceases to blow the bamboo whips
back twice as hard. In wing chun we always assume that our opponent may have a size
advantage and more power. To visualize force against force think of an oak tree not
yielding to the wind. If the tree is rigid and fights the wind the tree will crack and
slam into the ground, the greater force wins. You need to be like water and flow to the
least resistant.
Sifu
Gallaher will also be in the soon to be released book on the lineage of Yip Man style wing
chun. Yip Man was Bruce Lee's teacher. Yip Man was the modern day Grandmaster of the wing
chun system. Sifu Gallaher had the unique opportunity to demonstrate his ability in China
in 1999 at the 1st World Ving Tsun Conference. Sifu Gallaher has a pure lineage that is
quite rare. He has studied privately with one of Yip Man's sons, Yip Ching and one of Yip
Man's senior students, Chan Chee Man. Sifu Gallaher has also studied with his primary
teacher Sifu Samuel Kwok for many years. Sifu Kwok is the highest representative of both
of the sons of Yip Man. This was only the beginning of Sifu Gallaher's trip. Also on this
trip Sifu Gallaher had the great privilege to teach alongside his mentor in the Jeet Kune
Do fighting system, Ted Wong. Sifu Ted Wong was personally groomed by Bruce Lee. Sifu Wong
is considered by most to be Bruce Lee's protégé. Sifu Wong was invited to teach a
seminar in Hong Kong and Sifu Gallaher was able to assist some of the students in their
training at this two-day event. Gallaher said it was strange being the only qui low, that
is a foreigner. Teaching alongside my sifu in his own culture was a thrill. The entire
seminar was in Cantonese, which tested his Cantonese speaking ability. After the seminar
Sifu Gallaher accompanied Sifu Wong with a full entourage of delegates from Hong Kong and
Mainland China to open the Bruce Lee museum in China. Sifu Wong was the honorary guest
representing Linda Lee Caldwell, the former wife of Bruce Lee. Gallaher had the privilege
to represent the second generation students at this once in a lifetime event. The Jeet
Kune Do museum is government sponsored organization. There were plenty of government
officials present in this event. |
